The US Navy has launched a new type of missile destroyer, the futuristic missile destroyer. USS Zumwalt is a result of over a dozen years of engineering work and previous experience. Construction of the ship lasted four years, and its estimated cost was $ 4.3 billion.
The futuristic silhouette of the prototype destroyer is the result of the designers’ desire to best protect the craft from the detection and deception of enemy radars. It also serves to hide in the hull all the elements beyond it, such as antennas or radars.
The design of the “inverted hull”, in which the ship is quite atypically tapered upwards, is made of composite materials and has no unnecessary protruding elements. Even Seahawk helicopters operating from the deck and drones are to be stored in hangars inside the ship.
The ship is equipped with an integrated underwater weapon system, dual-band radar or anti-infrared missile defense system. One of the most interesting weapons systems in the ship is a 155 mm (Advanced Gun System) cannon which can fire targeted ammunition, providing up to 150 km artillery fire, with a rate of fire of 10 rounds per minute. USS Zumwalt is equipped with two such cannons.
In addition, there are also 20 four-cylinder vertical launchers that can carry missile launchers: RIM-66, RIM-162, BGM-109 Tomahawk and RUM-139. Two 57-millimeter Mk 110 can be used for direct defense.
